Discovering and Protecting Plant Diversity
The Basel region is home to a remarkable diversity of plants. Flora beider Basel brings together volunteers, botanists, scientists and conservation specialists to document this diversity and improve our knowledge of where wild plant species occur today.
Exploring the flora of Basel
Botanical research has a long tradition in Basel. In 1622, the Basel botanist Caspar Bauhin published one of the world's first local floras. Extensive botanical surveys followed over the centuries.
Flora beider Basel continues this tradition with modern methods. Landscapes and habitats are constantly changing. Some plant species disappear, others spread into new areas, and populations can increase or decline. Up-to-date information is therefore essential for understanding and protecting regional biodiversity.
Our aim is to find out which plant species occur where and how their populations are developing.
Citizen science for biodiversity
Flora beider Basel is built around citizen science. People with an interest in plants contribute their observations and help improve our knowledge of the regional flora. You do not need to be a professional botanist to participate. Everyone is welcome, from complete beginners to experienced botanists. Participants can record wild plants across the Basel region, take part in botanical missions, survey selected areas or join special projects. Along the way, they can improve their plant identification skills while contributing valuable scientific data. Every reliable observation helps build a more complete picture of the regional flora and supports biodiversity research and nature conservation.
From plant observations to conservation
Knowing where plants grow is fundamental to effective nature conservation.
Plant records can reveal changes in species distribution, identify important populations and highlight developments at an early stage. The information collected through Flora beider Basel therefore provides an important basis for biodiversity monitoring, scientific research and the protection of threatened plant species. Observations are recorded digitally in collaboration with Info Flora using its online field book or the FlorApp (more information).
Discover, learn and connect
Flora beider Basel is not only about collecting data. It is also about sharing botanical knowledge and discovering nature together.
Excursions, identification sessions and other events give participants the opportunity to improve their botanical skills, meet other people interested in plants and explore the diverse habitats of the Basel region.
From urban neighbourhoods and gardens to forests, dry grasslands and other natural habitats, there is always something new to discover.
